Summer Exercise Safety Tips

Summer is here! So many of us head outdoors to get our physical activity in the bright sunshine. Whether you’re running, playing a pickup game of basketball, or going for a power walk, follow these precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses and injuries.

Hydrate
Drink water before, during, and after exercising in hot weather.

Avoid Intense Heat
If you’re exercising outside, do your activity in morning or evening to avoid the
most intense heat.

Cool Off In The Water
Swimming is a great whole body workout that decreases the impact stress of
your body and improves your strength, endurance, and cardiovascular fitness.

Wear Appropriate Clothing
Wear loose fitting, light weight, moisture wicking clothing when exercising in the
heat.

Protect Your Skin
Apply SPF 30 at least 20 minutes before going outdoors. Reapply every two
hours. Remember to also protect your eyes and wear sunglasses.
