Pivot Physical Therapy

Joe Flannery, PT, DPT, OCS

Clinic Director, Physical Therapist

Joe Flannery started out with plans of going to medical school because he looked forward to treating patients, enjoyed learning about anatomy and physiology and solving problems.  Then, he learned about physical therapy and somehow just knew that “this profession was a better fit for me. Family members gave me grief, and said I would not be challenged enough. However, I believe that what you do is not as important as how you do it.”

Joe, who grew up in a military family, graduated from Poquoson High School and considers Williamsburg home, earned his Doctor of Physical Therapy from the Medical College of Virginia in 2004.”

“Like most physical therapists, I’ll never forget my first patient. Recently, I saw her and she reintroduced herself to me by asking her if I remembered her. I responded ‘of course,’ and she shared that her shoulder felt its best ever after receiving physical therapy from me in 2004.”

In 2006, after two years of extensive training, received his manual therapy certification, and in 2010 became a certified orthopedic specialist in physical therapy.

Today, Joe is the clinical director of Pivot Physical Therapy’s Williamsburg, VA location.

“I believe in treating patients the way I want to be treated by any professional, and feel it is a privilege to treat patients. Since I like a challenge and solving problems, I work hard and do my best to get every patient better.”  It’s an honor, Joe said, when you see those patients return to an active life.

“There are individuals and groups of patients that I’ll never forget. There were some with horrific injuries, requiring extensive surgeries, who could not walk, and left physical therapy fully independent.”

When he’s not in the clinic, Joe spends time with his wife, 3 kids, and dogs and participates in recreational tennis, golf, and basketball.

“I enjoy helping William and Mary sports medicine and athletics in any endeavor I can, and being a guest speaker for various local clubs or organizations.”

Joe holds Direct Access Certification and is available to evaluate and treat patients without a prescription from a physician.
