Pivot Physical Therapy

Joan Fernandez Tomas, PT

Physical Therapist

Tomas is originally from Manresa, Spain and received his degree in Physical Therapy from Fundación Universitària del Bages, which is part of the Universitat Autónoma de Barcelona in 2005. He then moved on to earn his Masters in Manual Therapy from the Universidad de Granada in 2011.

Before coming to Virginia, Tomas worked in his hometown of Manresa. He also worked in basketball tournaments and as a volunteer in sport meetings. In order to become a licensed Physical Therapist in the state of Virginia, Tomas had to complete a traineeship that consisted of 1000 hours under the supervision of licensed Virginia Physical Therapist, John Mitrovic, PT, SCS, ATC, CSCS, Vice President.

“I will always be thankful for the opportunity that John gave me,” Said Tomas.

In 2015, Tomas sat for the National Physical Therapist Exam and passed. Once his traineeship was complete, Tomas joined the Tidewater Physical Therapy team in Williamsburg, VA.  Tidewater rebranded to Pivot Physical Therapy in 2017.

Tomas believes, “The purpose of physical therapy is to provide the patient with the necessary tools to create the perfect environment for their body to recover.” He feels every patient he helps has something that makes them special and he loves finding out what that is.

One of Tomas’s favorite patients was an 80 year old man he treated in Spain who was having a lot of problems with his gait. After working long hours with him he was making great progress. One day, he came to the clinic without his cane and thanked Tomas for all his hard work, saying he couldn’t have done it without his help.

“I know it is probably a very usual situation in our profession, but I was young and fresh out of college, and that made me realize that I really choose the right profession,” said Tomas.

One of Tomas’s specialties is manual therapy, but he also enjoys learning how neuroscience is emerging as a resource for physical therapy.

In high school, Tomas played basketball a for club team in his home city. He also volunteered in different sports activities in Spain. In his free time, Tomas enjoys playing basketball, cooking, reading, painting, and spending time with his family.
